An Act which succeeded the Cantonments Act, 2006. The Act provides for Municipal administration and Governance of Notified Cantonments in the Country. Presently there are 61 Cantonments in the Country.

The Act provides for powers and responsibilities of the State Government and other authorities to make provisions for welfare of parents and senior citizens

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (No. 35 of 2009). The Act is relevant as being a local body, Cantonment Boards have been assigned statutory functions under the Act in respect of providing education within Cantonments. The Schools managed by Cantonment Boards also come within the purview of this Act. School Management Committees are constituted by the schools under this Act.

The Cantonments Bill 2003 was introduced with a view to re-enact the earlier Act in the context of Seventy-fourth Constitutional Amendment and to provide for better urban management in Cantonments as recommended by the Standing Committee of Parliament on Defence and the Action Taken Note of the Government on their recommendations.
