Magh Mela at Allahabad Cantonment

The Magh Mela is  one of the greatest annual religious affairs for Hindus. It  is held every year at Sangam (the confluence of the three great rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) in Prayag near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The congregation of people from different parts of country (even from outside the country) take place on a piece of Defence land falling within Allahabad Cantonment.
Every twelfth year, the Magh Mela is transformed into the Purna Kumbha Mela.

It occurs four times every twelve years and is organised in rotation among four places: Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Every twelve-year cycle includes one Purna Kumbh Mela (Great Kumbh Mela) at Prayag. But the greatest is the Maha Kumbh Mela which periodically falls every 144 years or after 12 Purna Kumbh Melas, at Allahabad. "Ardh Kumbh Mela" which is held at the sixth year and marks the halfway stage between the celebration of the Purna Kumbh Melas every 12 years.

Millions of devotees converge here to take a ceremonial dip in the Triveni Sangam. It is believed to be the spot where four drops of the sacred nectar had fallen during the battle between the Devas (demigods) and Asuras(demons) over the Amrit-Kumbh(pot of nectar).
