Recruitment and Career Prospects
Recruitment to the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES) is made through the civil service examination conducted by the UPSC. After completion of the induction training at National Institute of Defence Estates Management (NIDEM) located at New Delhi, Probationers are initially posted as Chief Executive Officers in Cantonments. The post involves carrying out executive functions of Civic Administration and Land Management. The post also carries an appointment house, suitable transport and other infrastructural support for discharge of executive duties.
The Defence Estates Officer (usually a Senior Time Scale & above level Officer) has jurisdiction over large areas. His functions include land management and land administration.
Staff posts at various levels are in the Directorate General Defence Estates, New Delhi and also at the six Directorates of Defence Estates. List of Directorates is as under:

Career prospects in the Indian Defence Estates Service is comparable with other Group 'A' Services. Officers of the 1980 batch have been promoted to the Higher Administrative Grade (in the pay scale of Rs.67,000 – 79,000) which is favorably comparble with the IAS.
